Providence, Brother Daniel safe bets
published: Saturday | November 15, 2003

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

THREE TROPHIES are at stake on today's Caymanas Park 10-race programme which kicks off at noon.

These are the $320,000 $270,000 claiming race for the Solomon Ziadie Memorial Cup over 1500 metres, the Restricted Allowance IV for the Glen T. Williamson Cup over 2000 metres and the Sunnyside Stakes for native bred maiden two-year-old fillies over 1100 metres, to be contested by 13 starters.

Bang in form ZEEDON, who completed a hat-trick of wins in the higher grade over 1600 metres on Wednesday, has a glorious chance of extending his winning streak in the Solomon Ziadie Memorial Cup, but he can expect stiff opposition from the consistent GILNOCK, HARLEY BARLEY, CASTAGNA and FRIENDLY EXPRESS who finished in a dead heat with him for first over 1700 metres on October 29.

In a really tough race, ZEEDON will be right there at the finish, but the one I like best is the stretch running GILNOCK to be ridden by in-form Shane Ellis for owner Elias Haloute and trainer Anthony Nunes, all of whom teamed up to win last Saturday's Red Stripe Superstakes with PITTACUS.

BROTHER DANIEL, who was narrowly beaten by QUICK MEDIC in a recent 1200-metre race, should rebound impressively in the Glen T. Williamson Cup.

Trained by Wayne DaCosta for owner Cecil Charlton, the sparingly raced 4-y-o colt by Al's River Cat out of Pleasant Company was having his first outing in over a year when failing to stave off QUICK MEDIC.

However, BROTHER DANIEL will have gained immensely from that pipeopener and with the longer distance more to his liking, it will take a brave punter to oppose him with leading all-time jockey Winston Griffiths aboard. He should win from old rival STILL A KING, AMANDA'S GOLD and VOICE MAIL.

SUNNYSIDE STAKES

The $365,000 Sunnyside Stakes for fillies should provide the well forward debutante PROVIDENCE with her maiden victory.

Trained by 13-time champion Philip Feanny, the well conformed chestnut filly by Law Of The Sea out of She Knows Beau has been travelling nicely at exercise, keeping pace with stable-companion DISTINCTLY IRISH who was an impressive winner on his recent debut over 1100 metres in smart time.

PROVIDENCE looks to have good speed and despite the obvious claims of fellow debutante PANTHEA, a chestnut filly by Kammtarra out of Irie from the Nunes stables and the experienced SHARAPOVA, who chased home DISTINCTLY IRISH at a respectable distance recently, she is poised to get off the mark immediately.

I also like Percy Hussey's CAT PRINCE to extend his streak at the expense of SCOTCHONTHEROCKS in the first race, stable-companions CAT COVER (2nd) and the impressive CITY LIGHTS (5th), and PRINCE ADINO from KING OF THE BAND, OBEAHMAN and PHYSICS BOOK in the closing straight five race.
