Tourism is driving agriculture - Morrison
published: Monday | November 17, 2003

By Damion Mitchell, Staff Reporter

THE EXPANSION of tourism is driving a demand in domestic agriculture, says Dennis Morrison, chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB).

"The Ministry of Agriculture and the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) must begin to organise farmers to produce more to meet additional demands that will be created through the expansion of tourism within the next three years," Mr. Morrison said.

Compared to other Caribbean countries, "the input of agriculture and other local produce into the tourist industry in Jamaica has been very strong but there is room for improvement," he said. He was speaking with The Gleaner on Saturday following the launch of the 2004 St. Mary Agri-Expo at the Beaches Boscobel Resort and Golf Club.

"Production has to expand and we need to work to continue improving the quality of the produce supplied," Mr. Morrison said. Already some hotels have established marketing schemes with farmers.
