By Ainsley Walters, Staff ReporterDAMION WILLIAMS, a member of the national Under-23 squad, was shot and injured during a drive-by shooting near his home along Omara Road, off Hagley Park Road, St. Andrew, yesterday afternoon.
He has been a regular member of the national Under-23 team but injury has forced him out of the squad which is now in Guatemala for the second leg of the second round Olympic qualifying game against the Central American country. The young Reggae Boyz won the first leg 2-0 on Sunday.
The stylish, pint-sized player, who moved from Waterhouse to champions Portmore United for the new Wray and Nephew National Premier League season, was shot twice, Portmore manager Clive Marshall told The Gleaner.
"He's at the Kingston Public Hospital nursing gunshot wounds," Marshall confirmed. "He was hit in the right arm and below his left ankle while talking to a friend near his gate."
He added: "I just spoke with him and he's okay."
Marshall doesn't believe the 22-year-old footballer was targeted.
"I don't think so," he said. "I can't think of any reason why he should be."
Marshall said four other persons were shot during the incident but was unable to say whether there were any fatalities.
