Uncompetitive air fares
published: Thursday | November 20, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM intrigued by the difference in the cost of a round trip from South Florida (Miami/Fort Lauderdale) to Jamaica, and a round trip from the same South Florida airports to JFK, New York.

The journey to Jamaica is less than 50 per cent of the New York trip, but the cost by Jet Blue and other carriers to NY, is less than US$200, taxes included.

I am aware that there are carriers other than Air Jamaica which ply this route to Jamaica, but it concerns me that together, they may be operating a cartel, since their fares are so uncompetitive.

Maybe this other observation will seem to be kind of "tongue in cheek", but could the "feasting and champagne imbibing" be the straw that broke the cost barrier? I have used these carriers to and from New York on many occasions, and I must concede they do not assist in obesity and drunkenness on their flights.

Respectfully anticipating some form of acknowledgment on behalf of myself and my fellow Love Bird travellers.

I am etc,

CHESTER EBANKS
