Manley, Jago in final
published: Thursday | November 20, 2003

By LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

NORMAN Manley High and St. Jago High will contest the final of the Walker Cup knockout competition with wins over Charlie Smith and Tivoli Gardens respectively at Ferdie Neita Park, St Catherine yesterday.

Norman Manley dethroned defending Walker Cup champions Charlie Smith 1-0, thanks to a Bryan Bayliss goal in the 52nd minute.

St Jago remained unbeaten in 2003 schoolboy football action, drubbing Tivoli 4-0. Horace Sharpe (42nd and 77th minutes) and substitute Michael Marsh (81st and 86th) both scored twice for St. Jago in a game which they dominated.

To add to Tivoli's shortcomings, they ended the game with 10 men after Kemar Flemming picked up his second yellow card midway through the second half with the score at 2-0.

"Once you are playing a team that has scored 40+ goals and conceded only one you can't play them with 10 men and expect to do well," said Tivoli's coach Dave Clarke. "We were doing reasonably well until the two yellow cards and I think that's where we lost it."

RECORD PROVES

Commenting on his team's success this season, St. Jago's coach Danny Hawthorne said his team's record proves that they are the best team this year despite a few disappointments.

"We have proven to Jamaica that we are still the best team in the competition despite not advancing in the Manning Cup, undoubtedly we are the best team," Hawthorne said.
