The Minister needs to do his work
published: Monday | November 24, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAD to write to endorse your 'Letter of the Day' sent in by Marcus Selyah. Information Technology (IT) is not call centres. The Minister continues to mislead the Jamaican people in believing that IT has any real relation to picking up a telephone and nagging people to buy credit cards, household items, etc. In essence, it's a sales job.

If the Minister had done any research on call centres, he would have discovered that by checking on the Internet, he would have not so quickly invested the country's resources in a dying industry. Frankly, I was quite surprised to find out that the Minister was still pursuing this course rather than investing into the real IT industry.

I am suggesting to the Minister that he investigate the idea of marketing Jamaica as having programmers able to take on jobs throughout the Caribbean. Minister, start little and you will have room for growth.

I am, etc.,
