2007 - deadline for regional unity!
published: Sunday | November 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OUT OF collective vision comes collective action. The upcoming staging of the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup is probably the greatest opportunity for West Indians to achieve this. Like members of a family gathering their emotions and resources to plan a birthday party, so must all West Indian nations find a way to stage this World Cup, with a style and efficiency that will expose our talents, passions and potential to the world.

The exposure of doing something right, in front of the critical eyes of the world can unleash a positive legacy gaining us recognition and good fortune years after 2007.

Just like it was when we looked to put a West Indies team together, so must we also seek to 'team-up' our resources to benefit collectively from a significant opportunity on many fronts. Through history, we as people have survived and come through difficult circumstances; our unique culture has expressed that survival; we must continue to survive, but unity is the only option in a world of globalisation.

We have a deadline to get our act together; let us use the motivation of staging the 2007 World Cup, to achieve regional unity. If we can work together for this cause, it can prove we can work together for so much more. Let 2007 be a deadline not only for the Cricket World Cup, but also for establishing a true and practical sense of regional unity and co-operation! And to top it off, wouldn't it be poetic justice for us to win the World Cup and celebrate together as Caribbean people.

The challenge is clear, the challenge is near, but dear God we must prepare!

I am, etc.,

MARK BF PIKE
