THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE TRIBAL nature of Jamaica's own special brand of politics gets blamed for just about everything that goes wrong in the society. As a United States citizen, qualified to vote only in that country, I can assure you that politics, by its very nature, is always tribal wherever voting takes place. I have to add that if you vote according to your conscience, you won't win very often.

During my long-life, I have voted for a winning presidential candidate just twice: Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1940, and John F. Kennedy, 1960. I'd dearly love to win just one more before I die.
