Journalism week celebrations
published: Sunday | November 30, 2003

CELEBRATIONS OF National Journalism Week began this weekend under the theme 'Professional Standards in the Media' with church services at the Webster Memorial Church on Half-Way Tree Road, Kingston, and at the Ocho Rios Baptist Church in St. Ann.

The service in Kingston will be followed by a brunch hosted by Capital and Credit Merchant Bank, at Alhambra Inn on Tucker Avenue.

Three veterans, Freddie Smith, Leslie Miles and Marguerite Gauron will be honoured at the annual veteran's luncheon on Wednesday, December 3, at the Wray & Nephew hospitality room, Spanish Town Road at 12:30 p.m.

The week's activities will culminate with the awards ceremony on December 4, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel where Senator Bruce Golding will be the guest speaker.

The 'Journalist of the Year 2003' will receive $100,000. This award is sponsored by LASCO. Awards will be made in 10 other categories: photography, news, investigative reporting, features, sports, opinion writing, finance and business, cartoons, small publications and a national award, sponsored by the PAJ. More than $500,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to journalists topping the various categories. This year, the awards have been named for stalwarts of the profession.
