THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AM, to say the least, outraged at the repeat performance of the Jamaica Public Service Company's (JPSCo) advertisement in The Gleaner on November 17, 2003, depicting an infant in an electric chair.
The Bible, in the book of Psalm 127, says that children are gifts and heritage from the Lord. We then have been made stewards or guardians of these most precious gifts from God. Hence, the preponderance of our responsibility for the welfare of our children. We can be certain that we will all one day, be accountable for the stewardship of our children. Therefore, we cannot afford the luxury of lethargy, complacency or apathy in a time such as this, when this kind of subtle assault is being made on our children.
We need to let the JPSCo know that we will no longer tolerate their abominable unrepentant behaviour. I cannot understand why organisations who are recognised as children's advocates, the government and the bureau of standards for advertisement have not come out in our defence in this despicable and deplorable advertisement.
My commendation goes to Mrs. Betty Ann Blaine, children's advocate from 'Hear The Children's Cry' who singlehandedly voiced her disapproval emphatically concerning this calculated affront on the very core of our nation.
We need to unite and plan strategies to counteract JPSCo's unwarranted deplorable behaviour.
I am, etc.,
DEEPLY CONCERNED J'CAN
