$3m penalty after man jumps bail
published: Wednesday | December 3, 2003

A MAN who stood surety for a murder accused has been ordered by the Supreme Court to pay the $3 million in the bond because the man has absconded bail.

Lester Barcoo, 62, businessman, of Corletts Road, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, was taken before the Home Circuit Court after a warrant was issued for him.

He confessed in court on Monday that he did not know the accused before the day when he bailed him on August 13, this year. Barcoo said that two men pressured him to bail the accused. He said he did not know the Justice of the Peace who signed the documents for him to bail the accused man.

Barcoo had used his land title to bail Andre Hinds of Metcalfe Road, Kingston 13. Hinds should have appeared in the Home Circuit Court on October 27 but failed to attend. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Hinds, otherwise called 'Swallie', is charged with the murder of Kean Gardener, who was gunned down in front of his home at Rodney Road, Kingston 13, on May 19, 2001.
