'Adopt a little piece of Mandeville'
published: Wednesday | December 3, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN AN effort to clean and beautify Mandeville, I am running a programme called 'Adopt a little piece of Mandeville'. This calls for businesses or individuals to adopt an area of Mandeville, clean and beautify it, or sponsor us to employ the person to do it for you. The programme includes the cutting of bank sides and the planting of flowers, adopting a round-a-bout and beautifying it, painting an area, such as the market, the park or the courthouse. Sponsoring stop signs, or any required sign that is needed by a school, a dangerous corner, etc. Contributing garbage bins, bushwhackers, brooms, shovels, lights, fountains etc.

In return, businesses may erect an advertisement or acknowledgement free of charge on their 'little piece of Mandeville'. We are also looking for artists to create a sculpture of Sir Alexander Bustamante and Hon. Norman Manley to be placed in the Cecil Charlton Park. We would like artists to also paint the history of Mandeville, e.g. the creation of Pickapepper, High Mountain Coffee, the Bauxite Industry, Pioneer Chockolate, the Kendal train crash and any other thoughts that Mandeville people would like.

And if there are any creative, historical persons who would like to help me in this endeavour, please contact me through the Manchester Parish Council. The only qualification is that you are positive and will get things done!

So far, the response has been wonderful. Everyone wants to see their town look clean and beautiful. And everyone remembers how beautiful Mandeville used to look and they want that beauty to return. Let us work together to make our town one that we can all be proud of!

And drivers, remember to be courteous to other drivers, let them out, obey the traffic regulations, park squarely and think of others. Everyone wants to be safe this Christmas and there have been too many tragic accidents in Mandeville recently.

I am etc.,

COUNCILLOR SALLY

PORTEOUS,

Deputy Mayor of Mandeville
