TWO-GOAL win for Arnett Gardens would be perfect.
Getting it, however, does not seem such an easy proposition for their Caribbean
Football Union (CFU) Club Championship return leg semi-final at Tony Spaulding
Sports Complex at 6:00 p.m. today.
Their Trinidad and Tobago opponents, CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh, won the
opening tie 3-1 in Trinidad last week and can afford the luxury of a 1-0 loss
or any other by a two-goal margin as long as they score more than one goal.
A 1-0 loss would still make them 3-2 winners on aggregate and a two-goal loss
in which Jabloteh score twice or more would make them advance by the away goal
rule, even though the aggregate scores would be the same.
The away goal rule counts each goal scored by the travelling team as two in
the event of a tie.
There exists another possibility that would force a tie-breaker if the
Trinidadians lose by a similar margin to which they won, 3-1. Then, extra-time,
and penalties if necessary, would decide the outcome.
FIRST-HALF DOUBLE
Jabloteh, the Trinidadian pro league champions, started very well with a first
half double from Aurtis Whitley and their third goal came five minutes into
the second half from Cornell Glenn for a 3-0 lead.
Rae Graham pulled one back for Arnett.
Jerome Waite, coach of the local team, outlined the difficulties awaiting his
side, saying their opponents are "... in tip-top shape physically, technically
and tactically. The have good speed, precision passing, accurate shooting ...
and when I say accurate I mean power shooting. It's a very athletic team, they
run for 90 minutes."
Despite those qualities, he says the visitors are not "invincible".
"The last time we played we created the first three chances in five minutes
and didn't put away any. So we know how to penetrate them, it's not like they're
invincible," Waite said.
"As long as the team can stick to the plan and concentrate for 90 minutes
it can make the difference. The two most important things that we need to do
are to ensure that at the end of 90 minutes we don't concede a goal; and make
sure we put away our chances when we get them," he said.
Asked if his players possessed the same belief, Waite said: "They know
what took place the last time we met and they are feeling confident they can
turn the tables. We need maximum support behind the team. Home advantage at
this level always will make a difference."
Though they have quality, Arnett have not played anything close to the form
that took them to back-to-back titles and runners-up spot last final in the
last three National Premier League seasons.
Most of their top players were away at the start of the season and while almost
all are back home now, several are injured and they have not been able to assemble
a combination which play consistently well.
A regular league leading and high-scoring team, they have only scored 15 goals
in a dozen games this season to be 10th in the 12-team standings.
STRIKE FORCE
Graham, with five goals in Arnett's three previous matches in this competition,
is sure to be in the strike force again along with Denton Shedden, Cornel Chin-Sue,
Everton Bunsie and Jonathan Williams. But a number of other leading players
face 11th-hour decisions through injury, including Walter Boyd and Garth Boota,
and Alberto Fray is out after being kicked out of their 2-1 NPL loss at Rivoli
on Sunday with a broken arm.
Defensively, they have been awful, already conceding 21 goals.
"There is one area that needs to tighten up because we've been giving
up too many soft goals, even right throughout the Premier League and that is
the reason we're in the position we're in right now. The communication needs
to improve and we need to play much more compact."
Like Arnett, Jabloteh are also coming off a weekend lost, going down 2-0 to
North East Stars in their FA Cup competition. They had also lost their return
tie 2-0 in the previous stage, after winning the away tie 3-0.
"Arnett have a very good team and we are hoping to have an exciting match.
Obviously we hold a two-goal advantage at the moment, but we are taking that
out of our mind and will go out there to play a good game," said Ricky
Hill, coach of Jabloteh.
The winner of this series will advance to the final against Trinidad and Tobago
team W-Connection, which beat national league champions Portmore United 1-0
in their two-game series in Trinidad and Tobago last week.
