The value of fair competition

THE EDITOR, Sir:
OVER THE years it has been normal for local manufacturers or local players to grapple in the face of competition. Our lottery industry did and now it's the players in the cement industry. Cable and Wireless also launched a massive anti-competition campaign which cost it millions of dollars and was unsuccessful.
I have said all that because I want to make the point that Cable and Wireless having lost the battle to keep Digicel out of the market, embarked on another campaign to keep its share of the cellular market by offering more phones, lower rates and new, exciting packages. Competition, instead of destroying Cable and Wireless, has only strengthened the company and has made it a force to be reckoned with in the industry. The competition has in response been offering its share of packages and attractive rates.
The efforts of both companies have benefited the Jamaican public and made it possible for us to be on or above par with the telecommunications industry of many other countries of the world. I say 'yes' to fair competition, it transforms our local players into global giants in no time.
I am etc,
