Stun guns for animals
published: Thursday | December 4, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE MANDEVILLE abattoir is a chamber of horrors for animals. Animals are bludgeoned on the head and their throats are slit because of a lack of stun guns. The three slaughter-houses in Manchester are no further on in humane treatment to animals than the world was a thousand years ago!

The Manchester Parish Council has tried unsuccessfully to bring in three stun guns from the United States. These stun guns have been paid for and cleared for entry into Jamaica by the relevant U.S. agency. It is Jamaica who is not allowing them to enter the country. It appears that physical and mental cruelty to animals does not matter.

I am calling on any entity in this country who is interested in the prevention of cruelty to animals to help me to lobby the Government to allow the stun guns to enter the country. I am also asking that the Minister of Local Government, Portia Simpson Miller insists that all of Jamaica's abattoirs be equip-ped with stun guns right away.

I am, etc.,

COUNCILLOR SALLY

PORTEOUS,

Deputy Mayor, Mandeville
