Are J'can politicians free of crime?
published: Friday | December 5, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM 41 years old and I can't remember ever hearing about a politician being arrested, charged and convicted of any serious criminal offence. Yet we hear all these talk about the politicians dealing in guns, drugs, supporting the dons, corruption and other illegal activities.

Is it that difficult to marshall the evidence against them? What is preventing the police from doing what is necessary to get these people arrested, charged and prosecuted? Jamaica is no way near serious about tackling lawlessness on the island.

At least here in the United States, from time to time you hear corrupt politicians being hauled before the courts and sometimes thrown in jail. Are the Jamaican politicians so clean and free of crime and corruption? I don't believe so, not with all those garrison communities.

Unless the police have a zero tolerance for criminal activities, the crime situation will only get worse.

I am, etc.,
