THE FORMAL opening of the Justice Education Unit will be one of the main features of International Human Rights Day to be observed on Wednesday, December 10.Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, A.J. Nicholson, who made the announcement, said the Unit is a resource centre where members of the public could access information on the avenues to seek justice or redress grievances.
Mr. Nicholson who was speaking at a briefing session at the Justice Ministry in New Kingston on Tuesday, said the unit would have a small audio visual laboratory as well as Internet-connected computers.
"We are starting in a small way, but the thrust that we have is to allow persons students, institutions of civil society, lawyers, church persons even, to understand how they can develop a participatory exercise [in] the struggle for the promotion and protection of human rights," he told the session.
LAWS OF JAMAICA ON-LINE
The day will also be marked by the official launch of the Laws of Jamaica On-line and the Ministry of Justice's web site at www.moj.gov.jm. The Minister said several persons have been asking that the Ministry put the laws of Jamaica on-line. He added that updated printed copies would still be available for purchase.
Also on the agenda for the celebration of International Human Rights Day is the mounting of an exhibition in the lobby of the North Tower at the Ministry's Oxford Road office. The exhibition will be opened on Wednesday afternoon and run to Friday, December 12.
Mr. Nicholson said schools, church clubs, service clubs, non-governmental organisations, and other special interest groups have been invited. "We intend on that day also to highlight to the media and members of the public some of the advances and improvements that we have made in Jamaica's justice system, over the last 10 to 15 years," he added.
