THE EDITOR Sir,
THE NATIONAL Water Commission has been clamouring for a rate increase to the detriment of poor people. They were asking for 42 per cent . I can tell you that most of the water that the NWC produces for Spanish Town actually goes to waste. It ends up in the drains and gutters of Spanish Town.
There is a major burst main in front of 29 Nugent St. in Spanish town that I have being reporting for the past three years, yet nothing has been done to it. I have gone to the Spanish Town office myself on more than three occasions to report the leak and still it's there wasting water away. If the NWC took time out to repair leaks like these then I am quite sure that they will see a dramatic decrease in operating expenses.
Similar leaks are all over Spanish Town, and especially in the areas bordering King Street, Nugent St, Martin Street and surrounding areas. The NWC can go take a look for them. If the OUR had done some research about water wastage, then I think that they wouldn't have considered granting the NWC any increase in the first place.
The NWC continues to ask the public to conserve water, yet they themselves are not setting any example. It is time that the NWC start replacing those old rotten water mains in and around Spanish Town.
I am etc.,
