Shying away from responsibility
published: Saturday | December 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JAMAICANS PONDER every day why our country suffers from a high crime rate, corruption in the public sector and economic mismanagement. The answer lies in the fact that the men in general are shying away from responsibility, such as caring for their children, playing a more pivotal role in the church and getting educated.

The women are in the vast majority in our universities (75%) and have most of the jobs in the country. But it is still the males who are the top dogs. The leaders of the major political parties are male, most of the heads of corporate businesses are males and most of the leaders of the church are male.

If you look at the murders committed this year, most were by men. My female friends say that in order for women to get quality jobs, they have to work that much harder than men in a male-dominated society. Wake up men, and help your country to grow by pulling your weight and becoming better leaders in this society.

I am, etc.,

ANDREW WILSON
