THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN YOUR December 4th issue, Mr. Newton Amos's plea for assistance for handling the crime problem in the western parishes of Jamaica is almost deafening.
He blatantly relates this problem to the drug trade and its operators who he points the finger to as 'Mr. Bigs'. This we have heard of before, from the Minister of Security and the Commissioner of Police, with inferences of politicians and police being involved. To this there must be some truth.
FULL-FLEDGED INVESTIGATION
Recently a full-fledged investigation was launched by the police into what Mr. Edward Seaga claimed was tainted funds used in the election of officers in the JLP. My question is, does that assertion bear more merit than Mr. Amos'? If the answer is no, then why aren't we hearing of an investigation into all these beliefs by Mr. Amos, Mr. Phillips, and Mr. Forbes?
In your Friday December 5 issue, Mr. Godfrey Dyer blames Mr. Amos' remarks on inept policing. Here is what Mr. Dyer has placed in the heads of possible citizens who may be inclined to help in investigations:
"With killings like those, I am sure people will think twice before crossing these people's path by giving information to the police".
Now Mr. Dyer, I sincerely hope that you will be a patriarch in the re-instatement of the death penalty. Mr. Amos and other dedicated crime fighters need this function to become 'effective police'.
I am, etc.,
