For the sake of Jamaica
published: Tuesday | December 9, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS only because of my deep love for my country that I venture to write this piece. I have been observing the arresting change of leadership that is taking place in the JLP. This is a good thing for what was becoming a moribund party. This breath of fresh air does give some hope that there may after all be a viable alternative to the PNP for the government of Jamaica.

What Mr. Seaga should be doing at this time is preparing the party for a post-Seaga transition. He should be moving to dispel the perception that he is addicted to power, a disease which affects those who believe that they have an entitlement to exercise authority over the lives of others.

Those who truly love and care for Mr. Seaga should do the decent thing and encourage him to begin making plans for the smooth and statesmanlike transition that is sorely needed at this time. They would be doing a patriotic job for the country and they would be doing Mr. Seaga the great service of not allowing his addiction to power to drive him into a pit, out of which he may never get a chance to come.

The Young Turks in the JLP must be advised to temper their exuberance and become a part of this 'encouragement' team without rancour or bellicosity toward Mr. Seaga. They must recognise the sterling services that he has rendered to this country and allow him, in good faith, to use the reservoir of experience that he has garnered over the years to guide the transition. I look with eyes wide open at what will happen in the JLP over the next 18 months. For the sake of Jamaica, I hope that good sense will triumph.

I am, etc.,

Rev. RALSTON NEMBHARD
