To the nation's detriment
published: Wednesday | December 10, 2003

The EDITOR, Sir:

THE DEBATE on whether the Government of Jamaica should reduce the subsidy currently afforded to tertiary level students comes as a tremendous surprise. It seems as if the Government is missing some very important signals taking place in the society, which so clearly prove that cutting the subsidy would be detrimental to the nation.

It has long been felt by many that the public sector should attempt to mimic the private sector by way of the emphasis placed on accountability. The National Commercial Bank's recent funding of CXC subjects for secondary level students, in my opinion, highlights yet another area in which the government could take a lesson from the private sector. The bank obviously realises the importance of education to the to Jamaican society to an extent, which seemingly surpasses that of the government.

I am, etc.
