Only the Queen speaks the 'Queen's English'
published: Wednesday | December 10, 2003

The EDITOR Sir:

WITH REGARD to the letter "Deciphering English" on December 8, 2003 by Nigel M. Steele, I understand exactly what you are saying; it is the same way I feel when I engage a person from England in a conversation. I find their English difficult to understand even though they have had the opportunity of a formal education in England in spoken English.

Try talking to someone from London's East end or a Geordie (Newcastle) or anyone from up north. I find that they are difficult to understand even though they have had formal education in England. I find myself giving up half way through the conversation as I become tired of asking them to repeat the gibberish that come out of their mouths. I have come to the conclusion that in England, only the Queen speaks the Queen's English.

I am not saying your article was a negative attack on the two ladies but what I have realized is that this situation exists among local populations in almost every society.

I am etc,

ANDRE A. STEWART
