Honesty is the best policy
published: Thursday | December 11, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS expected that the person(s) within the Ministry of Education who are responsible for the errors should be sanctioned and measures put in place to prevent a recurrence.

It is equally expected that those teachers who knowingly accepted these overpayments should repay the people of Jamaica. I will not entertain the thought that those teachers were not aware of their pay packages. It is regrettable therefore, that the JTA should seek to extricate their members from this responsibility.

Admittedly, we cannot expect a one-time full repayment; and in this regard the Jamaica Teacher Association (JTA) should seek a payment plan on behalf of its members. Integrity should count for something. One cannot choose to be dishonest just because everyone else is. We were taught that 'honesty is the best policy'.

I am, etc.,
