'A NIGHT of Miracles', a Christmas cantata by composer John Peterson, will be the main work in the annual concert by Voice, the choir of the Temple of Light Church of Religious Science, on December 21.Based on passages from St Matthew's and St Luke's gospels, the 45-minute thematic religious work tells the Nativity story in the "original" way the composer strove for. Writing in 1958 about the composing process, Peterson explained. "As I started to list the reasons supporting the miraculous nature of the birth of the Christ, a theme began to emerge... the theme of an unforgettable night when prophecies, centuries old, came miraculously true; a night when shepherds were awe-stricken by a gloriously brilliant heavenly host that told of the birth of the Prince of Peace," he said.
Voice will be conducted by Profesora Teresa Guerra Valdes and accompanied by the church's musical director, Noel Dexter, and pianist Angela Elliott. Dexter and Susan Goffe are the narrators, while soloists will be John Scott, Howard Daly and Lascelles Dixon.
Singing the cantata's duet will be Elizabeth Terry and Clive Thompson.
The concert, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will also feature a variety of lighter works in its second half.
Voice, which has 20-odd members, was formed in 1998 and performs regularly at the Temple of Light Church of Religious Science and at various events outside the church.
