The gov't is bankrupt
published: Friday | December 12, 2003
THE EDITOR, Sir:I AM not convinced that the Government is not interested in a borrowing arrangement with the IMF. It is patently clear that the Government is bankrupt and is not able to carry out its obligations to various sectors of the economy. The fiscal deficit is growing and the international market is no longer hospitable to any solicitation to feed Jamaica's gargantuan appetite for debt.
Very soon the government is going to need more than the IMF's imprimatur. It is going to need money directly from the fund. The sooner the Govern-ment realises this and swallows its pride, the sooner we may begin to look with more seriousness at the economic crisis facing this country.
It is clear that its stubborness not to enter into a borrowing relationship with the fund, when the options to do otherwise have become virtually non-existent, is a clear indication that the Government is willing to continue playing a political game with the future of this country.
I am, etc.,
