Ganja debates a waste of time
published: Friday | December 12, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

GANJA DEBATES, parliamentary or otherwise, are a waste of time in this country. Whether or not the law is amended to make ganja legal for personal use in small quantities in one's personal domain, it will not make much of a difference to what currently ensues where the use and abuse of ganja by individuals is concerned.

The fact of the matter is that ganja smokers will continue to smoke as much ganja as they please, wherever and whenever they choose, law or no law. Therefore, I think it's a waste of Parliament's time to pursue the proposals as put forth by the Ganja Commission, no matter how noble and reasonable they might be.

Conversely, Parliament ought to set up a commission, to garner solutions on how to decrease the current number of ganja/ cocaine/tobacco/alcohol users which currently exist in our country. Wouldn't this make far more sense?

I am etc,
