Three charged for cop's murder
published: Thursday | December 18, 2003

A TEENAGE girl, her 25-year-old brother and a 20-year-old female mechanic, were charged yesterday in connection with the brutal killing of Police Inspector Ansel Dwyer, formerly of the Corporate Strategy Co-ordination Unit.

The teenager, also a mechanic of Grenada Road in Kingston 11, has been charged with murder, illegal possession of firearm and robbery with aggravation.

Her brother, Carlos McKie, alias 'Granny', a chef of a D'Aguilar Road address in Kingston 11, was charged with conspiracy to robbery, accessory after the fact to murder, receiving stolen property and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

The third person, Shenika Smith, popular known as 'Shanie', of Heathfield Road in Franklyn Town, Kingston 16, is facing charges of murder, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and robbery with aggravation.

"We are now compiling the file to set a court date for next week," said Detective Inspector Michael Phipps, head of the St. Andrew South Homicide team.

The sub-officer further said that the three accused are to appear in the St. Andrew Criminal Court. After the final question and answer session with the accused persons yesterday, the police have confirmed that the motive behind the policeman's death was robbery.

A 27-year veteran of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Inspector Dwyer who was the holder of a Master of Science degree, was attacked at his Washington Gardens' home in St. Andrew and stabbed 79 times on the night of November 8.

Allegations are that the two female mechanics were invited to the policeman's home. Residents claimed they heard screaming and shouts for help from Inspector Dwyer's house. When one resident went to investigate, a woman brandished a gun and chased him away.

The body of the sub-officer was later found in a pool of blood at the house. Reports are that blood samples of two other persons were also found at the crime scene.
