Ja's car rental business a turn-off
published: Thursday | December 18, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM in total support of the comments expressed by letter writer Caswell Isaacs, in The Gleaner of December 16, re-garding the rental car business. I was absolutely blown away by the requirements for rental of a car in Jamaica.

I make frequent business trips to different countries from time to time and had to visit Jamaica for a few days. I was told by one major car rental company that my cost for four days was US$320 plus, I was required to make a deposit of US$2000, which would be waived if I was renting on Mastercard Platinum.

This is a major disincentive for travelling to Jamaica. There is no reason for mid-size or compact car to be rented for US$60-90 per day, and the deposit requirement, an absol-utely crazy idea, especially for someone who is renting on a valid credit card.

By the way, I cancelled my reservation and found an alternate source of transportation.

I am, etc.,
