MP attacked, threatened
published: Thursday | December 18, 2003

EASTERN ST. ANDREW Member of Parliament Dr. St. Aubyn Bartlett was verbally attacked and threatened by one of two men, during a social session at the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) headquarters on Belmont Road, St. Andrew.

The uproar attracted the attention of Opposition Leader Edward Seaga and the shadow minister for national security, Derrick Smith, who reprimanded the men for behaving in such a disrespectful manner to the Member of Parliament.

"I spoke with them," confirmed Mr. Smith.

It is alleged that while the men were being spoken to, Dr. Bartlett slipped out of the JLP headquarters and reported the matter at the Constant Spring Police Station, St. Andrew.

Contacted yesterday, a senior detective at the station confirmed that a report was entered in the station diary. Part of it said the men told Dr. Bartlett that they were going to make his life miserable.

BEGAN SOME TIME AGO

The Gleaner also understands that the problem between the MP and the men began some time ago at the Caymanas Park race track in St. Catherine, where Dr. Bartlett works as a veterinarian.

The men are believed to be from his constituency. Further allegations are that one of the men claimed that he was recently released from prison and was not getting assistance from the MP.

Efforts to contact Dr. Bartlett proved futile.
