MegaMart officially opens
published: Friday | December 19, 2003

By Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

IT'S NO secret that there is a new MegaMart store in the Corporate Area (Upper Waterloo to be exact). So in a show filled with music, under the starlit sky with a little chill in the air, the new store was officially opened by CEO of MegaMart Gassan Azan ably aided by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson. So there's no need to go to Portmore to do your shopping, unless you like the drive!

Mr. Azan said that Thursday night was the culmination of 14 months worth of work. Don't know who he forgot to thank as everyone from the architect to his own family was included. But this was no night to brag about the store's success. He made mention of the vision for a better Jamaica.

"As a society we have to work together to find the best possible mix of policies and national consensus to facilitate the process while we agree to disagree on other matters," he said.

OFFICIAL TOUR

There was little room to park for everyone wanted to be a part of the event. Once the ever-present Custos of Kingston Rev. Canon Weeville Gordon dedicated the building, the automatic doors rolled up to reveal the towering, well-stocked shelves with everything for your shopping needs. The PM and CEO could have given the Pied Piper a run for his money as they had a huge throng following their every move as they 'window shopped' in the official tour. Some persons (yours truly included) decided to do some real shopping of their own.

MegaMart took care of their guests outside as well in the early part of the evening. There were booths set up by various food and drink companies (the sorrel was fantastic) to keep everyone refreshed while they enjoyed the entertainment, especially from the Emmanuel Mass Choir and singing phenomenon Samantha Strachan.

Carmen Fenton, who on December 7 became the first member of the new store, was duly rewarded for her exuberance with two airplane tickets from Continental Airlines. Really pays to shop, doesn't it?
