WEST INDIES fast bowler Jermaine Lawson took a major step towards returning to the international scene when he delivered three overs for David Bernard Jnr.'s XI against Gareth Breese's XI during Jamaica's practice/trial match in preparation for the Carib Beer Series at Sabina Park yesterday.
It was the first time since Lawson who was reported for a suspect bowling action during the fourth Test against Australia in May had bowled in competitive cricket.
In that game, the young paceman took a career best 7-78. His fastest delivery was clocked at 93 miles per hour.
Under International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations, he was given up to six weeks to correct his bowling action but a back injury which was aggravated in the same match delayed the process.
Biomechanics specialist Dr. Paul Hurrion, a member of the ICC panel, who flew from Britain to Jamaica to assess Lawson's bowling in August, said progress was made but more work was needed.
Lawson, who has so far captured 29 wickets at 24.31 runs apiece in seven Tests, said he felt good after getting to bowl three overs.
"I am just trying to get 100 per cent fit and hopefully get selected in Jamaica's squad for the Carib Beer Series.
Lawson said, despite some changes to his action, "I think I can get back to top pace, however, I don't know how fast I am bowling at this moment but so far I am pleased with myself."
The 21-year-old removed Lorenzo Ingram, 20, caught at gully off a short-pitched delivery, to Mario Ventura.
However, Lawson cannot return to first-class cricket until he is cleared by the ICC. Despite that, he said, "I am looking forward to it (Carib Beer Series opener), because its a long time I haven't play."
Meanwhile, yesterday's third day was highlighted by an unbeaten 105 from Keith Hibbert for Gareth Breese's XI. Hibbert, who hit 15 fours, faced 120 balls.
Hibbert and Ingram put on 139 runs for the first wicket. Maurice Kepple, three, was the other not out batsman when rain stopped play just minutes to 5:00.
Earlier, in Bernard's XI innings, Evon McInnis (71, 9x4, 2x6 from 62 balls) and Ventura (59 not out, 6x4) led the way against Andrew Richardson (5-62) and Odean Brown (3-46).
Final scores going into today's final day, Breese's XI 347 for nine declared and 151 for one; Bernard's XI 204. The 16-man squad is expected to be named today.
