ON SATURDAY, the Central Village police, south central St. Catherine, charged Everald Warmington, Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament (MP) for St. Catherine South-west, with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Mr. Warmington is to appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on January 13, 2004 to answer a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and a charge of using abusive and calumnious language.
The Central Village police said it received a report that on Friday, December 5, the MP, while walking through his constituency, punched a man in the mouth.
The man filed a complaint with the Old Harbour police, who, on investigation, issued a warrant for Mr. Warmington's arrest. The Central Village police arrested and charged him on Saturday, them released him on station bail.
Mr. Warmington, a veteran politician, first won the seat for the JLP in 1980. He lost in the 1993 and 1997 general elections but returned last year and defeated the People's National Party's (PNP) Jennifer Edwards.
