Respect people for who they are

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I READ with interest the letter penned by Darolyn Henry in The Gleaner of December 15, 2003. I was immediately drawn to the heading, "Does size really matter", if only for the fact that just recently one of my students won an essay competition which had as its opening line... 'Size is misleading'.
Unlike Ms. Henry, however, this essay pointed to the fact that from small, and seemingly insignificant things, one can achieve great results. Is Ms. Henry suggesting that persons who are small in stature should be denied the opportunity to achieve their full potential in their chosen field of endeavour because of their diminutive size? I would hope not...
It is not persons who are small in body that we should be so concerned about, as those who are so SMALL in MIND that they cannot see beyond the physical. I respect the writer's views, though I do not agree with them. It is about time we started respecting people for who they are, and not for what they look like.
I am, etc.,
