Dancehall's depravity
published: Tuesday | December 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS appalling to see the murky depths to which dancehall music in Jamaica has sunk. These hurry-come-up babblers spew profanities, arrange rhymes like struggling four-year-olds and 'trace' each other better than any market meddler.

And this trite rubbish parades as music!

Jamaicans, and especially our women, need to have greater self-respect and demand that our music industry aspire to the highest standards. No wonder reggae and dancehall are dying! When many fans are throwing down palm fronds and prostrating themselves before nit-wits such as Vybz Kartel, it tells us that the moral fibre of our nation is irreparably tattered.

How can we tolerate trash that a woman should 'tek b...', along with the fridge and furniture and songs extolling the fact that a man should 'breed a gal like photocopier'?

Come on, ladies, if you're gonna stone and bottle artists, at least do it to those who demean women.

I am, etc.,

ANDRE WRIGHT
