'Edu-tainment'
published: Tuesday | December 30, 2003

The EDITOR, SIR:

I WRITE to give commendation to the programme staff of the CVM-TV Communication Group. The Christmas time is often bombarded with much foreign programming, showing local viewers, like myself glimpses of Santa Claus, snow, reindeers, etc. While this has its place in its 'edu-tainment' value, it was much more appealing in many ways to see our local products on display in the form of the performing arts.

With its presentation of singing, dancing, and Total Theatre, from some of Jamaica's very own well recognised groups, the viewers were blessed with the warmth of local Christmas spirits and the delightful joy to think that this sea of talent exists within our small shores.

I really hope to see this sort of trend continue. For I sincerely believe that this is what we need to support our local culture and the arts, that is a joint effort between theatre and the media. For too long our talents are going abroad to seek recognition.

Therefore I sincerely thank the programming department of CVM-TV for dedicating its Christmas Day and Boxing Day programming to the celebrating of our local performing arts.

I am etc.,
