THE EDITOR, Sir:
OKAY, SOMEBODY please help me out here. I have been seeing prayers to Mary being published in The Gleaner and I am quite disturbed by it. Nowhere in the records of the Bible was it ever stated that anyone prayed to Mary the mother of Jesus? Was it ever stated by the apostles or prophets or Jesus himself? I have searched, and it is mentioned nowhere throughout the entire Bible.
If this then is thus, why in the name of Jesus would anyone pray to Mary. Is she as dead as any other person from Bible history (apart from those translated)? Then why are prayers to Mary being made?
The Bible tells us plainly in 1 Tim 2:5 "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" and in Matt 6:9 "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." Do we need any plainer teaching or instruction?
Mary is dead and Ecclesiastes 9:5,6 tells us "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything ...; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in any thing that is done under the sun." So there you have it! Our prayer should be directed to God the Father through Jesus Christ the son. Certainly NOT Mary.
I am, etc.,
