SEYMOUR MULLINGS, Jamaica's Ambassador to Washington, D.C., will be stepping down from his post "very early" this year.
But speaking to The Gleaner yesterday, Senator Delano Franklyn, State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, said the move was not a result of the former deputy prime minister's rumoured health concerns.
"It is part and parcel of an age-old system that has existed (in the Ministry)," Senator Franklyn said. Ambassador Mullings will no longer fulfil that capacity in Washington (as of early next year), he added.
Noting that the return of Jamaican diplomats for the Christmas and New Year holidays was usual "at this time", Senator Franklyn was unable to verify rumours suggesting that Ambassador Mullings returned to the island because of illness. He, however, pointed out that the Ambassador had not yet vacated the Washington post.
Senator Franklyn pointed out that a replacement for Ambassador Mullings has not yet been found.
