THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE in response to Sean Bernard's comments, "So-called multiracial society", where he echoed his views (mostly negative) about his experience living and working in Canada. Mr. Bernard's views are unfortunate, he found everything wrong with the Canadian society and shouted racism at every opportunity.
Ironically, Mr Bernard has since relocated to Massachusetts, a State he mentioned is also very racist, yet liberal, and now he seems very comfortable living there. I've had the opportunity to live in both places, and like anywhere else, I do believe that many Jamaicans experience severe problems when they migrate, partly because of culture shock and the little they bring to the table to begin with.
We must adapt and grow into our adopted countries. The starting point is never easy, and often it involves 'starting over' until you can establish your own record of accomplishments.
To cry foul, or shout racism when things don't go our way, is not only absurd, it is ridiculous. Society owes us nothing, regardless of our race, colour or creed, or even the degrees we may or may not bring to our adopted countries. You find options and explore opportunities, you do what you have to do to make it work for you, and chances are you would then be able to enjoy and share in the goodness of life and what the society has to offer in return.
I am, etc.,
