Joe Armond passes on
published: Friday | January 2, 2004

CAYMANAS TRACK Limited has extended its condolences to the family and relatives of the legendary racing administrator, Joe Armond who passed away on Friday, December 26.

Funeral service will take place on Monday, January 5 at the Stella Maris Church, 62 Shortwood Road, Kingston 8 at 11:00 a.m. Interment follows at the Dovecot Memorial Park.

With strong family ties to horse racing and a lifelong interest in the sport, it was no accident that after leaving St. George's College, Lucien Joseph 'Joe' Armond began a career spanning three decades in thoroughbred racing.

In 1966 after the two promoting companies (Jamaica Turf Club Limited and Knutsford Park Limited) merged, Armond was named co-managing director of the new company, Racing Promotions. He served in that capacity until he retired in 1976.

Armond, father of former CTL director of racing Chris Armond and Wayne Armond of Chalice Band, was truly a trailblazer. He was the first recipient of the prestigious None Such Award for lifetime achievement in 1989. He was also a member of the Jockey Club of Jamaica for over 20 years and Racing Steward for over six years.

Armond was a strong family man and contributed to many charitable endeavours through the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and Stella Maris Foundation of which he was a member.
