Reopening the 'Red Caps' issue
published: Saturday | January 3, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I'M SURE this subject has been repeatedly visited but I think it is high time to re-examine the issue.

From as long as I can remember travelling to and from Jamaica, the 'Red Caps' were always at the airports. One could say it was tradition? Like other countries we could move into the 21st century? I don't wish to take the bread and butter from these men but I would like to think they could co-exist with trolleys like other international airports. Some of us would like to do it ourselves, as we have been forced to after leaving our airports in Jamaica.

Yes, the trolleys would be left all over the place after use if a proper system was not in place. And yes this could be a 'free' service like aboard but I'll be practical to suggest a token system could be used to counteract chaos.

VENDING MACHINES

Vending machines using US$2 per token to operate a trolley (many supermarkets abroad have this system), so that when trolleys were returned to the designated area, a cash refund is made (a nominal fee could also be implemented if deemed necessary). If not returned, then it would be a way to earn money for the airport to maintain the system.

Of course, many of us may or may not use this system as our bags are usually too heavy or we just love the convenience/service of the 'Red Caps', for tradition sake, etc. but a choice would be nice.

I am, etc.,
