Platinum card concerns
published: Tuesday | January 6, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HOPE that the people who can investigate and maybe bring about a change will read this. Yesterday I received an 'Updated Information about your account', the account is my Platinum Plus Mastercard -MBNA. On reading the accompanying pamphlet (the fine print) I noted some statements which I found alarming. I will quote them verbatim. "Platinum Plus Mastercard Benifts-MasterRental Insurance coverage-will pay for the entire rental transaction. Decline the collision/loss damage waiver offered by the car rental company..."

"In general, coverage is accepted worldwide, but there are exceptions, You may be unable to use this service in Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica and New Zealand".

In the question and answer section the answer to the question "When and where am I covered?" "This coverage is available on a 24-hour basis, in the U.S. and most foreign countries. No coverage is provided for motor vehicles rented in Israel, Jamaica, or the Republic Of Ireland or Northern Ireland".

Am I being overly sensitive, is this known to the responsible authorities in Jamaica? Why is Jamaica an exception?

I am, etc.,
