By Rasbert Turner Spanish Town:
MAYOR OF Spanish Town Dr. Raymoth Notice has said that the St. Catherine Parish Council will be entertaining a zero-tolerance approach to illegal vending in the old capital this year.
Dr. Notice, who is the chairman of the Parish Council, told The Gleaner during an interview at his office that the days of illegal vending will be a thing of the past.
He also said the council would be working with the police and representatives of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) to address the problem that has plagued the old capital for sometime.
"I'm in a no nonsense mood and will be doing everything in my power to regularise vending in Spanish Town (this year)," the Mayor said. He commended the members of the St. Catherine North Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF) who started the programme.
On Saturday last, members of the ISCF could be seen removing illegal vendors from French Street, Manchester Street and the Cumberland Road areas of Spanish Town. All these streets are in close proximity to the Princess Market which was reopened last month following a six-week closure to facilitate repairs at a cost of $4 million.
The Mayor said the exercise of removing illegal vending would be ongoing as "it can't be business as usual."
