THE EDITOR, Sir:IT IS really a positive move when the Government of Jamaica is trying to develop our roads and is making highways. We have really come a long way from 'Puss Tracks' to highway and even the recently imposed Toll Road.
On the other hand, I think the Government should pay attention to the parochial roads in our communities in Hanover for example, Salt Spring, Cash Hill to Patty Hill and Kew Roads. The state of these roads is totally unacceptable and they should never be classified as roads, but "donkey tracks".
I can recall a few weeks ago, because of the collapse of the bridge at Green Island, commuters to and from Negril had to take an alternative route. I was more than appalled at the condition of this alternative route. With tourism on the rebound, I was surprised that the authorities would use that route for guests to get to and from Negril. Taxi drivers made a killing charging and tripling fares "to assist with vehicle maintenance".
I am, therefore, making an appeal to the Government to look "outside the box" and attend to the roads in the rural communities. After all, there are people living there too.
I am, etc.,
