THE EDITOR, Sir:
NOVEMBER 2003 I had the pleasure of going on a tour of homes for the elderly and homes for abandoned children with the Mayor of Kingston and St. Andrew, Mr. Desmond McKenzie, and would like to use this medium and publicly say thanks for this opportunity.
On this tour we were shown the challenges at the nursing homes, and the opportunities for improvement. Most of these homes, although in need of much financial injection, appeared to be well managed, and the people cared for. However, there were obvious flaws, which I will not dwell on as too often we spend our time dwelling on the negatives, rather than motivating so that the worker or management will feel good about what they are doing, and in an effort to continue doing good attend to the negatives.
The Mayor, a real statesman, was very involved in his project, showed a caring side that I did not consider to be political or for the cameras, showing his approval and his disapproval if and whenever necessary.
Mr. Mayor, continue to do for Jamaicans first and your party second. I hope that your attitude and spirit will rub off on the community and we can see each other as Jamaicans, friends, family and neighbour rather than political rivals.
I am, etc.,
