Common redundancy
published: Tuesday | January 13, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

YOUR EDITORIAL of January 10 contains the reference to 'ATM machines'. This is a common redundancy expressed by ignorant people but one which should not be perpetuated by an experienced institution such as yours.

This is in the same category as 'eight a.m. in the morning' and 'PIN number'.

ATM is an acronym for Auto-mated Teller Machine, so adding 'machine' after the letters is repetitive, redundant and tautologous.
