Hinds to miss Test series vs England
published: Tuesday | January 13, 2004

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

Wavell Hinds

DUE TO the severe groin strain which has affected him since the opening Test match against South Africa in Johannesburg, Jamaica and West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds will miss the entire Test series of the England tour of the Caribbean.

"The doctor recommended six to 12 weeks rest," Hinds told The Gleaner in an interview at the Norman Manley International Airport last night following his return from South Africa.

The 27-year-old batting allrounder says he will rest for four weeks, after which "...I will start therapy and then rehabilitation will take place".

The English are scheduled to open their Caribbean tour with a three-day match at Sabina Park on March 5, after which the first Test will take place between March 11-15 at the same venue.

However, Hinds believes it is too early for him to say if he will be available for the England tour.

"After six weeks we will assess it (injury), because I think at that point in time it will be better to say if I will be ready for the English tour."

With the fourth and final Test scheduled for six weeks from now, April 10-14 in St. John's, Antigua, it means Hinds will not take part in the Test series.

It might be possible for him to return for the One Day International series, which begins on April 18 in Georgetown, Guyana.

Hinds said the injury, which started to affect him on the second day of the first Test in Johannesburg, did not contributed to his lack of form.

However, he said he was trying to play through the series with the injury, but "at this point in time it has gotten worse and as a result I had to leave the tour."

With regards to his batting form Hinds, who had consecutive scores of 10 & 0, 0 & 11, and 13 & 25 for a tally of 59 runs in six innings in the first three Tests, said:

"I was out of sorts, I would not put it down to the injury... I think I wasn't playing as I should and as a result I put in some dismal scores."

Despite failing with the bat, Hinds picked up five wickets with his right-arm medium pace in the first Test in Johannesburg.

He also said the pitches did not have any thing to do with his performance.

"I have played on those wickets before, I played in Australia, which is just as bouncy or even bouncier. It was just a matter of not moving accordingly and out of coordination, I think that's something I have to adjust in the near future."
