Karla for sportswoman of 2003
published: Wednesday | January 14, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE NOMINEES for the sportsman and sportswoman of the year 2003 have been named. Although voting for the awards is not by the public, I support Karla Williams for sportswoman for 2003. She played a very significant part in the recent World Netball Tournament, resulting in Jamaica placing third in the world. Karla lifted her game to heights never before achieved by her and provided inspiration to the other Jamaican girls, resulting in them also elevating their game.

She seemed to have motivated herself to her greatest height of performance out of a very strong desire for Jamaica to win the tournament. By so doing, she spurred on the Jamaican girls to a level of netball excellence, perhaps never before attained by our netballers.

On one occasion during the tournament, she seemed overawed by playing in her first World Championship, but like a true sportswoman of the year for Jamaica, she quickly regained her composure and resumed performing to the level she, during the tournament, has led us to expect.

By her performance she won the hearts of every Jamaican sportsperson and the appreciation of netballers worldwide.

I wish her many more games for Jamaica. I expect her to walk away with the title of sportswoman for Jamaica for 2003.

I am, etc.,
