Le Gourmet for all your deli needs
published: Thursday | January 15, 2004

By Kaili McDonnough, Staff Reporter

LOCAL DELIS, you better be on your P's and Q's as there is a new gourmet market that might give you a run for your money. Since its grand opening in early December, Le Gourmet on Kingslyn Avenue, off Red Hills Road has been serving up some of the finest deli style meats this side of town.

Owners of Le Gourmet, Sandra Campbell and Judith Affalalo, have always been lovers of the Arosa line of meat products that are produced in Drax Hall, St. Ann. What Campbell and Affalalo say they like the most about the Arosa line is that it is exceptionally tasty (each product is specially spiced by Robert Herner, the Swiss butcher) and contains no dyes as in the case of many sausages made in Jamaica. According to Campbell, "There was a demand in Kingston for good quality deli meats, so Judith and I just decided to capitalise on this by providing Arosa products to Kingstonites."

Jerk sausage, Knackwurst, Bratwurst (both German and Swiss), or Australian Prosciutto anyone? You don't have to take a plane anymore for your taste buds to be satisfied; just hop in your car and take a drive over to Kingslyn Avenue. Within the confines of the bright orange walls of Le Gourmet you will find a wide selection of smoked, cooked, dried and cured meats inclusive of sliced Black Forest Ham, Pullman Ham, Country Style Bacon, Jerk Pork slices, Smoked Marlin and Genoa Salami.

What's more is that this deli also has an impressive selection of fine rare wines for you wine connoisseurs out there. What caught Food's eye were two very moderately priced bottles of wine; the Portobello Rosso and Blanco (Red and White) which were on sale for $350 per bottle. Mrs. Campbell notes, "The Portobello wines are comparable with the wines that are for sale at supermarkets. They are priced competitively and make good drinking wines especially if you are entertaining a large group and want to be economical on the cost per bottle."

Le Gourmet imports wines from France, Italy, Spain, Australia and carries one Chilean selection. The shelves of Le Gourmet are stocked with bottles of Cotes du Rhone, St. Emilion, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Shiraz/Cabernet mix, Muscadet as well as three varieties of sparkling wines.

So if melon wrapped in Prosciutto is an appetiser at one of your dinner parties, or you just want to try a new bottle of wine, go and check out what Le Gourmet has to offer. From one foodie to another, you won't be disappointed.
