THE EDITOR, Sir:
AS A member of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), and a patriotic Jamaican, I am viewing the happenings within the JLP with keen interest.
I am a staunch supporter of the Hon. Edward Phillip George Seaga and I am of the opinion that as a politician, his contribution to nation-building is second to none, and in most cases above the best, and even at his age today, his ideas on how to get out of the mess that this present group of politicians running the country have us in is far superior to most of the ideas coming out of the younger mouths around.
Mr. Seaga is but one individual and there comes a time when the good and interest of one individual has got to be matched against that of the goals and objectives of the greater majority. I, too, am of the opinion that it's time he steps aside and make way for someone else to ascend to the role of leader.
I have listened to the views of a number of political commentators and most of them seem to want to foist Bruce Golding on the leadership of the party without regards to the party's constitution, which gives that right to the executives and delegates of the party. It's not yet two months since Mr. Seaga was elected unopposed as leader of the party and it won't be before the next annual general conference of the party that the executives and delegates of the party will get the chance to vote again.
My opinion in view of the events that have unfolded in recent weeks is that Mr. Seaga should resign as party leader and the group of parliamentarians in the party choose amongst themselves and make the recommendation to the Governor-General that individual whom they feel commands the greatest respect and name him/her Leader of the Opposition. That person could serve as the leader of the party until it's ratified, or a new person is chosen as party leader by the executives and delegates at the next annual conference.
I am, etc.,
